One of my favorite places to run away is Wannamaker Park in Ladson, SC. First, I'll drive deep into the woods and find a parking spot under a large tree. Sometimes I believe the giant oak tree branches hide me from the world of chaos. As I run along the never-ending dirt path, I hear the leaves crunching under my feet, flies swarming near my ears, water flowing in nearby ponds, and the smell of wet dirt and leaves. There are only dense trees and dirt paths in every direction I look. I am entirely alone. Somehow nature is relieving the overwhelming stress-related feelings. Is it the crisp air? Or is it being hugged and immersed in nature?
The power of nature to bring us immediately to the present is a mindfulness experience.
The American Psychological Association states, " From a stroll through a city park to a day spent hiking in the wilderness, exposure to nature has been linked to a host of benefits, including improved attention, lower stress, better mood, reduced risk of psychiatric disorders and even upticks in empathy and cooperation." So they are definitely on to something here.
